The abrasive chop saw and miter saw are fixed-position cutting tools used daily by ironworkers, MEP trades, and carpenters on NYC sites. The chop saw adds the hazard of abrasive wheel fragmentation to the kickback and guarding risks of a rotating saw. Both tools require consistent setup discipline — an unclamped workpiece or missing blade guard can cause amputation, eye injury, or worse in a fraction of a second.
Chop Saw (Abrasive Cut-Off Saw) Rules
- Guard must cover the wheel at all times except during the cut — never operate with the guard removed or wired open
- Use wheels rated for the tool's RPM and for the specific material (metal wheels for metal, masonry wheels for masonry — never cross-use)
- Secure the workpiece in the vise or with a clamp — never hold material with your hand while cutting
- The wheel must come to a complete stop before the saw is raised from the cut or moved
- Sparks: direct sparks away from workers, combustibles, and stored materials — chop saw sparks travel 20+ feet and remain hot
Miter Saw Rules
- Work must be clamped or held firmly against the fence — small pieces in particular are vulnerable to kickback
- Keep hands at least 6 inches from the blade path during the cut
- Return the blade fully to the up position before removing the workpiece — reaching under a moving blade to pull the cut piece causes severe laceration
- Never cross-cut material wider than the saw's capacity — forcing an undersized saw to cut oversized material creates binding and kickback
Eye Protection- Face shield over safety glasses required for all abrasive chop saw operations — abrasive wheel debris is unpredictable
- Safety glasses alone are not sufficient for abrasive wheel operations per ANSI Z87.1
- Bystanders within the spark zone must also wear eye protection
Discussion Questions- What personal protective equipment is required (minimum) for abrasive chop saw operations?
- You need to cut a small piece of angle iron. What must be in place before the saw comes down?
- The chop saw blade is still spinning when you want to reposition the material. What must you do first?
- Can you use a metal-rated abrasive wheel to cut masonry on this site? Why or why not?
