Double insulation is a design feature in many portable power tools that provides protection against electric shock without requiring a ground wire. It's widely misunderstood — workers either assume double-insulated tools are completely safe or that they don't need GFCI protection. Both assumptions are wrong and potentially fatal.

Inspection Requirements
  • Before each use: inspect housing for cracks, check cord for damage, verify all guards are in place
  • Any crack in a double-insulated tool housing exposes the protective insulation barrier — remove from service immediately
  • Do not modify double-insulated tools by adding a ground prong or bypassing the double insulation system
