Your feet are exposed to crushing objects, protruding nails, wet surfaces, electrical hazards, and chemical spills on every shift. The right footwear for NYC construction is not the cheapest boot at the supply store — it is footwear specifically rated for the hazards you face on this site, properly fitted, and replaced when worn out.
ASTM F2413 — The Rating System
- I/75 C/75: Impact protection (75 ft-lb) and Compression protection (2,500 lbs) — the minimum for steel toe work boots
- EH (Electrical Hazard): Insulates against 18,000V in dry conditions — required for all workers performing or working near electrical work
- PR (Puncture Resistant): Midsole resists nail penetration — required for demolition, roofing, and rough carpentry
- CD (Conductive): Used to prevent static buildup in specific explosive environments — NOT for construction
- Look for the ASTM F2413 marking on the inside of the boot — if it's not there, it's not rated
Slip-Resistant Soles
- Slip-resistant soles are critical on NYC sites — wet concrete, muddy lumber, and ice-covered decks kill workers each year
- Sole wear: a boot with worn, smooth soles provides near-zero traction on wet surfaces — replace boots before the tread is gone
- Keep soles clean — mud-packed treads lose their grip. Kick off excess mud before stepping onto a ramp or deck surface
NYC Site Foot Protection Policy- Steel-toed boots are required for all workers the moment they cross the site perimeter — not just for "heavy work"
- Athletic shoes, casual sneakers, and sandals are not permitted on the site under any circumstance
- Workers with medical conditions affecting their feet must provide documentation if requesting an accommodation — contact the GC safety team
Discussion Questions- What does "EH" mean on a boot's ASTM rating, and when is it required on this site?
- Your work boot soles are smooth and worn down, but the upper leather is in good shape. Do you need new boots?
- What is the "PR" rating and which trades on this site need puncture-resistant midsoles?
- Where do you find the ASTM rating inside your boot, and what minimum ratings are required on this project?
