Welding, Cutting & Compressed Gas

A compressed gas cylinder is a potential bomb when mishandled. A cylinder of oxygen at 2,200 PSI with a damaged valve can be propelled through a concrete wall like a rocket — the kneck failure case is an engineering reality, not a myth. Cylinders on NYC construction sites must be secured, stored correctly, and never abused. The rules exist because the consequences of getting them wrong are catastrophic.

Storage Requirements
Handling and Transport
NYC Sites — Acetylene Specifics
  • Acetylene cylinders must always be stored and used upright — if tipped over accidentally, allow to stand upright for at least 30 minutes before use
  • Acetylene pressure must not exceed 15 PSI in the hoses — above this pressure, free acetylene becomes unstable and shock-sensitive
  • NYC FC requires that cylinder quantities on each floor not exceed one day's supply — excess to be stored in designated exterior area
Discussion Questions
  1. How far apart must oxygen and acetylene cylinders be stored if there is no separating wall?
  2. You arrive to find an acetylene cylinder has fallen over during the night. What do you do before connecting the regulator?
  3. What must be on a cylinder before it is transported by cart to a new location?
  4. Why can a cylinder with a damaged valve become a projectile?
