Heat Illness & Cold Stress

Dehydration impairs physical performance, impairs judgment, and accelerates the progression to heat illness. By the time a construction worker feels thirsty, they are already 1–2% dehydrated — enough to measurably reduce strength and concentration. On a hot NYC site, proper hydration must be a structured practice, not something left to individual memory.

The Hydration Science Workers Need to Know
What to Drink — and What Not to
GC Responsibility for Hydration on Site
  • OSHA requires employers to provide sufficient cool water to all workers — at no cost to the worker
  • Water stations must be within reasonable walking distance of all work areas — not just at the shanties
  • During heat advisories, GC must increase the frequency of water breaks and verify worker compliance
  • Document hydration station locations and break schedules in the SSM daily log during heat advisory periods
Discussion Questions
  1. How much water should a worker drink every hour during hot weather work on this site?
  2. A worker says "I'm not thirsty so I'm fine." What do you tell them about how thirst works as a dehydration indicator?
  3. Your urine is dark orange at the lunch break. What does this indicate, and what should you do?
  4. Is it acceptable to drink coffee or energy drinks instead of water during a hot day on site? Explain why.
