Ladder Safety

Step ladder injuries are among the most common and most preventable on NYC construction sites. Workers climb above the safe climbing position, stand on top of the ladder to gain extra height, use a closed step ladder as a leaning ladder, or set up on uneven ground. These are not failures of equipment — they are failures of habit, and they cause serious falls every year in New York City.

What the Step Ladder Is Not
  • Not a scaffold: do not use a step ladder to support planking for extended work. Use scaffold or a ladder jack system
  • Not a work platform for two workers: one person per ladder, always
  • Not a material rack: the back rails of a step ladder are not load-rated for hanging heavy tools or material bags that shift the center of gravity
Discussion Questions
  1. A worker climbs a step ladder and stands on the top cap to reach 6 inches higher. What is wrong with this?
  2. You need to reach a different point on the wall. Do you lean or reposition the ladder?
  3. Your step ladder is on a slightly uneven concrete floor. One foot is off the ground. What do you do?
  4. Name two things a step ladder is NOT appropriate to use as on this construction site.
